Paul Brown, a Marine vet and father of three young kids, really wanted an automatic watch, but buying one was going to stretch his budget. So he just decided to make them instead.
Business was slow for about two years, until The Atlantic released an article titled “Flags of the Far Right” and featured the Christian Flag and the Appeal to Heaven flag (which was adopted at the time of the American Revolution by people who were praying God would spare the colonists from war) Nazi propaganda equal to the Black Sun symbol, which Hitler’s SS marched under.
A retweet with the words “You severely underestimate how much these people hate you” was the cultural shot heard ‘round Twitter…and launched one of the most fascinating viral movements for any brand I’ve ever seen.
This is a conversation about business. And watches. But mostly about how making a cultural stand is driving both of those things.
